Sorry, with so many changes, I got the first take wrong.
Thanks to Rick W. filling in, here are the Revised Match Pairings for Wednesday, 5/10, 7:30pm – 9:30pm @HTB;
Please note the change for Wednesdays for the remainder of May; 7:30pm – 9:30pm.
Dal / Peter
Mike T. / Rick W.
Dan W. / Gary K.
Tim / Kamal
Dan L. is our substitute.
I’ll be there any night I just am very appreciative of Gary’s work on our behalf. I was a high school principal and dea,f as a stone. I played basketball night and never heard a thing. Robin
Sent from Surface
Pickle Ball? That will surely bring up the decibel level.
Dal is working to become our most valued (sic) contributor.
Personally, the only thing that requires me to actually schedule time during week nights is our tennis. So whichever night(s) are agreed upon can be worked with!!
Maybe instead of basketball he could get a 4-square league going….. or how about pickle ball??? That seems to be the big up-and-comer.
I can usually put up with anything, but I was playing on court 1 on the night that basketball was being played on court 4. The noise was deafening, you couldn’t even hear the players that you were playing with, or the balls bouncing. Playing under those conditions is just no fun. ……. Shed
…otherwise everything you state is hooey as far as I am concerned. Did you play the night of the 20 dribbling basketballs and whistles?
It’s a curious world when a baseball player can stand 75 ft away from a guy throwing a 90mph fast ball at him with a cheering crowd all around him, but relative silence is required to play tennis??
Has anyone ever played tennis at the public courts in Portsmouth….. baseball, basketball, barking dogs, children in the playground, cars pulling in and out. Play to enjoy, we’re not on tour!!!
I’m just sayin’………
Mondays from 7-9 work best for me too. If I had too I could put up with basketball.
Monday is the only evening that continually works for me. Selfishly, I hope we keep that spot. Wednesday is sometimes a possibility but with less frequency. I would not be able to participate on Tuesday or Thursday. Sounds like we need to learn to coexist with basketball, somehow…..
I had a lengthy conversation with the new owner of The Sports Barn today.
It seems for next year that it will be difficult for him to provide us with both Monday as well as Wednesday play, but that is assuming we don’t want to coexist with basketball. I believe I spoke for the majority of us when I stated we could not play while basketball is going on. I based this on the one time we were required to play while court 4 was used for basketball. Volleys were missed, shots distracted, etc. If you weren’t there that evening, I am not assured that you will be of the same opinion.
So, some alternatives might be that he gives us 1 of our regular nights, say Monday and then we also have Thursday, or we play unencumbered by basketball by playing Tuesday and Thursday. I believe our time slots under any option will still be 7pm – 9pm.
Now personally I think our program has proven its viability and I was always told it was the most dependable group that the club had on the books, but I am open-minded regarding new ownership trying to make as many relationships and programs work as possible.
I understand as well that the new ownership wants us to fill the courts (Although I believe 3 courts will be all that is available. I say this last point because I recall him saying that 1 of the courts will be kept as multipurpose and if that is the case, I would not want to schedule a match there.), so it is important that we put forward the best program and times for the 40 or so players on our list. I believe the expectation will be that we continuously fill the 3 courts and I believe there also will be instituted a forfeiting of court fees by players who sign up to play but then cancel their participation during the period from when I post the match pairings, 7pm the evening before, until match time.
I hope everyone will jump in here and freewheel their thoughts. Monday/Thursday, Tuesday/Thursday, Monday/Wednesday(with no guarantee, no basketball). It’s your program so make it work the best for you.
Gary D. has just canceled, so here are the revised Match Pairings for Monday , 5/8, 7pm – 9pm @HTB;
Tim / Richard
Mike Girard / Andy
Scott / Kamal
Steve E. / Gary K.
Paul D. / Rachit
Brian F. / Robin
We no longer have a substitute.
Please note that Monday matches remain 7pm – 9pm. Sorry for the confusion.
We had 18 respondents to our Outdoor Doubles survey and surprisingly (to me) Monday evening was the choice. Monday shared 1st place votes with Wednesday and then had more secondary and tertiary votes while Wednesday actually received some “cannot play”s. (Actually, all evenings, except for Monday, had “cannot play”s.)
This means that our outdoor season will commence on Monday, June 5 at 6pm (please be able to start your match at 6pm, as darkness could be an issue early on).
Signups will open up here online on Tuesday, 5/29 at 10am. Each week thereafter, signups will open on the preceding Tuesday at 10am. On Sunday evenings I will publish the Match Pairings together with the ball responsibilities.
I you have any questions, please let me know.
Prefer 7, but can do 7:30.
Thanks for the update. I’m okay with the time change for Wednesday. Good call on reaching out to them. I’m sure they have a thousand details to manage, and now they know you.
No doubt they’re trying to keep everyone happy. And we want them to do well and continue supporting and re-investing in the tennis programs. It will be nice to hear their vision for the club and plans for the future. I’ve played every year since 2002.
Confirmed; Wednesdays in May will be 7:30pm – 9:30pm.
I heard rumblings this week that we were going to lose our Wednesday time slot for a Ladies 2.5 USTA team. I find it hard to fathom that our year-long program can be shuffled aside by a temporary event, as surely there are other times that these matches could be played (they could simply start their matches 1/2 hour earlier).
I never did receive an official notification about this, so I decided to call the club today and spoke with the new staff there. I can give the new ownership a pass on the lack of communication about this, as I assume something was in the works prior to the sale, but I expect better communications going forward.
Having said all that, it does look like we may be pushed back to 7:30pm – 9:30pm on Wednesdays only (and we are only playing through Wednesday, 5/31). I will post here, when I have confirmed this. In the meantime, please share your thoughts, and especially the 6 players already signed-up, please let us know if you can still play.
Rachit, the only store in the area still stringing racquets that I know of, is George and Phillips on Water Street in Exeter.
Also, Ron offers stringing and perhaps Tim can help you. Sorry, I used to, but now am only stringing for myself.
Sorry to use this blog but need some information about folks, stores etc. that offer to do restringing in and around Dover, Portsmouth etc….
If you have already completed the survey, thank you. There have been some valuable comments and the distribution of which evening is preferred is sort of interesting.
The survey should only take a couple of minutes, so I hope everyone will respond (even if they are not planning to play; they can note that in the comments).
If you are missing your copy of the link to the survey, please let me know and I will send you another.
Sorry, but I had a mistake on the earlier pairings. Too many last minute signups, I guess.

Richard / Mickey
Kamal / Dean

Gary D. / Peter
