Thanks for the update. Consistency makes sense…
Thank you, Gary. And Happy Holidays to everyone!!!
I wish to keep everyone on the same page. I heard back from the club owners and possible Wednesday times seem to be all over the road, when they are associated with 3 courts. Sometimes there are courts at 6:30pm and others at 7pm.
I wrote back that I am inclined to go for consistency and eliminate confusion, meaning I would propose that we play matches on 2 courts Wednesdays, 7pm – 9pm, starting January 3. Something seems to be in the works starting in mid-March but hopefully we can continue with the 2 courts till summer play.
Thanks for hanging in there with me as I try to do whatever I can to keep this great group together and viable.
Happy Holidays to all!
If there will be bball on one then count me out…I tried that once last year and it does not work. Sounds like our days are numbered.Steve E.
While playing next to BB or VB is not appealing, I support our program 100% and will play anywhere and any time we are scheduled to meet. Playing at other facilities besides the Barn will probably be more expensive and may require a greater commitment from our group as to how many courts we fill. At this late stage of the season, it seems playing at the Barn Wed. nights accompanied by BB may be the only way we can consistently get three courts without buying seasonal time. Looking back, it’s truly remarkable what Gary has been able to put together for us. I just hope we find a way to move forward and keep our numbers strong. Sincerely, Ron
I’ve been playing at the barn since 2002 and enjoy the variety of playing styles and personalities that get mixed up each week. I’d be disappointed to change, but Chris has 40+ basketball teams I think we’ll slowly get pushed out.
I’m mostly in a Monday groove right now, but play on Thursdays occasionally. The new surface is really tough to play on, but I was hopeful when I saw the matte finish on a section of court 3. I’d certainlygive playing alongside basketball or volleyball if came down to it. But I played competitive VB for 20+ years and it will probably be louder than the BB.
Coming from Dover, Robin and I travel about 27 minutes. Robin is sometimes a bit white-knuckled, but he’s a good sport about it. 🙂 The Tennis Coop is 9 minutes from where we live, but definitely more expensive. Great Bay is 22 minutes and a bit more expensive. Seacoast would be more like 33-35 minutes; can’t see their fees, but I see it’s a membership as well. That’s getting to be a long drive if the weather isn’t good.
None of these clubs will give us the flexibility of the Sports Barn. That said, they are wholly, or heavily invested in their tennis programs, the quality of their facilities, have stringing and demo racquet services, online booking, etc.
And to Toni’s point, no loud Communist Slogans…or basketball.
Maybe it’s time for Ron and Rich to form a new club. Pull in Kyle and Marc as partners? 🙂
I share Ron’s sentiments. We’re now third priority after B.B. and volleyball… I’ll try to play on Wednesdays and see if I can put up with bouncing balls, yelling, and whistles….and then wait to see what other changes may be in the works. But, it’s good to know that we’re not tied to the barn either…Happy to explore other options. Kamal.
I’ve really enjoyed the this program, it was a great find for me last year to join so many good, committed players. I think it’s a shame the new ownership at the tennis barn is making it difficult on existing, loyal customers to chase new ones.
Just an FYI… Greatbay in Newmarket is under new ownership and they seem to be really emphasizing tennis – that may be an option for another site in the future.
That being said I enjoy this group and will play if it’s Wednesday (along side basketball) or another venue on another day. While I’ve been struggling with some injuries lately I intend on playing more in the new year. Thanks Gary for your dedication in running the program and continuing to find options for us to keep playing.

I would play Wednesdays as much as I have played Thursdays. I know at least one person that have played with our group before who is working second job on Mon and Thu and the Wed change would give him the chance to join us again. As far as basketball going on the next court – I can survive. I played singles once with mens basketball on the two surrounding courts. It was a little disruptive at times when players passed from the "practice" court to the "match" court through our space. Another story was though when there was a basketball practice on the next court AND loud radio music WITH commercials. This is when I found commercials are more disruptive for human thoughts than communist slogans shouted through the megaphones I have heard back in another life on another planet.Regards
You make valid points and we quite possibly all share your view. However, I think we have to remember that our commitments to play are solely week-to-week. None of us players have a long-term investment (except maybe me, what with buying all the balls, ha-ha).
While it was a punch in the stomach for me, I guess I should have seen it coming. Other than destroying good will, the ownership could decide at any time to eliminate tennis altogether. The previous ownership hosted solely tennis and relied on us greatly to fill their unused courts. Several times Seab and others relayed to me that we were the most important, participated in, group at the club.
Having said all that, nothing is there to stop me from investigating other opportunities for our group. We know that we have a great bunch of 50 or so players and if we didn’t know it before, we know now, that we owe the facility nothing and could move our program if it suits us.
We had a good thing going for years at the Tennis Barn. The Sport Barn is trying to squeeze us in to a schedule that suits them and not our group. Even if we renegotiate our day and times for our matches, who is to say the Sport Barn won’t unilaterally change their minds and our schedule? As much as I’ve enjoyed playing at the Barn and it being so close to home, it may be time to look for a new venue. I almost feel like telling the Barn to take their courts and shove it up their ass. We jump through hoops and put up with marginal courts and then they say,"sorry, we make more money on Volleyball. They’ve demonstrated zero commitment to tennis. Who’s to say after we put up with whatever disrupting changes to our schedule that they won’t change again when it suits their interests? With a potential pool of 50 players, we should be courted not squeezed. Sincerely, Ron
So, do we “press” the owners to see if we can have 3 courts on Wednesday, 7pm – 9pm? Need to get everyone’s input.
I’ve always thought the same time slot as Mondays and the return to Wednesdays would provide us with the most players and therefore the better matches.
I would be willing to give it a shot with basketball being played on court 1. If I thought they would be willing to spend some money on tennis, I would be suggesting some sort of opaque, sound-blocking, curtain to be installed between the basketball and tennis, but that’s just not going to happen.
I know my availability is spotty, but when I’m in town I do what I can to play and greatly enjoy the group. Thus, I’ll play in pretty much any conditions, so if Wednesday is the only option, then so be it. Feel free to stick me on court 2 every time, I’ll adapt.
Really sad to hear that about Thursday tennis. Mike I’d be up for playing at the co-op as well playing at the barn Wednesdays. Although it’s not optimal with basketball playing. The level of matches we play certainly is worth the incinvience of the basketball noise.
Here are the Match Pairings for Thursday, 12/21, 7:30pm – 9:30pm @ The Sports Barn;
Robin / Ron
Toni / Steve H.
Kamal / Michael Pare
Tim / Gary K.
Faizal is the substitute.
Our only commitment in this program is week to week. No contract to be paid, no signing up for an extended block of play, no requirement on an individual’s part to obtain a replacement player.
Having said that, cancellations on the day of a match or right after I have published the match pairings (always 7pm the evening before matches) are an added burden for the administration of this program.
If you have an injury, sickness, family issue or any other situation requiring that you cancel, please try to let us know as soon as you know your situation. It is incredibly frustrating to plan the best competitive matches to learn shortly thereafter that I have to juggle things all over again. Still, we all realize things can happen with very short notice. We once had a player learn an hour before the matches that his son had been in a car accident. God forbid, that kind of thing does not happen ever again.
Scott W. has cancelled, so Paul D. is in the Match Pairings for Monday, 12/18, 7pm – 9pm @ The Sports Barn;
Tim / Dal
Peter / Gary K.
Graham / Robin
Tyler / Santosh
Ron / Faizal
Mike Girard / Paul D.
We no longer have a substitute.
